Helping Your Child With Spelling Homework

In school we teach spelling using the Sounds and Syllabels scheme -with regular, short bursts of practise.

At home you can follow a similar approach.

  •   Look carefully at the word - think about the rule or pattern that the word fits with.
  •   Say the word out loud to yourself - say it in a 'spelling voice'
    • say consonants crisply
    • stress reduced vowels
    • pronounce elisions
  •   Snip it into syllables
    • say and count the syllables
    • draw syllable lines
    • point and say in gaps to check
  •   Spell it one syllable at a time
    • isolate the syllable
    • separate the sounds
    • spell the sounds
  •   Check it for errors
    • identify and dot errors
    • write correct spellings below
    • say sounds as you correct spelling
  •   Write it out in full
    • copy the word without lines
    • say sounds as you write spelling
    • double check the word is correct
